Make Sure Your Russian Adoption Agency Is Properly Registered
Under new Russian laws brought into effect in May 2006, all foreign adoption agencies working in Russia are obliged to register as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) before they are permitted to process adoptions of Russian children. Any agency unable to register and receive their new accreditation before their current accreditation expires will be unable to continue their work. Fortunately, any adoption cases that are currently being considered by non-NGOs in Russia will be allowed to continue through to their conclusion. However, the procedures and criteria necessary for an agency to gain NGO status have not yet been laid out by the Russian government. As a result, the situation is at present very uncertain and timelines are impossible to predict.
