Introduction to the Adoption Process

April 2, 2007 by sachinskg

The process of adopting a child will vary depending on where you live as well as where the child lives. Some countries have their individual regulations throughout the country whereas others have laws region wide or statewide. The rules for eligibility will vary as well from country to country. Some may allow single parents or same sex couples to adopt whereas others may have regulations allowing only couples of same sex to apply. There may also specific age requirements.

Where and how you apply for adoption varies from country to country. There may be any number of the following agencies:

  • State agencies
  • Child adoption agencies
  • Child adoption facilitators
  • Private and licensed adoption agencies
  • Unlicensed adoption agencies

The US Department of State has received numerous complaints regarding child adoption facilitators operating in foreign countries. Since not all countries require that the agents or facilitators are licensed, cases of fraud are virtually impossible to avoid.

After applying to be a prospective adoptive parent, the first step is determining if they are suitable to be good parents. Either the adoption agency or a state agent representing the child will usually do a home visit of the parents and background check involving but not limited to financial stability, criminal record check, and medical history.
