Documents required for Chinese adoptions

Initial application

When submitting an initial application via an US adoption agency, the following documents are required:

  • An adoption application letter.
  • Your birth certificate(s).
  • A marriage, divorce or death certificate, or statement of single status.
  • Notarized and authenticated certificates of profession, income and property.
  • Your health examination certificate(s).
  • Details of your criminal record or a certificate of good conduct from the local police department. Alternatively, an authenticated FBI record can be obtained by sending your name, date and place of birth, social security number, two sets of fingerprints, $18 and a letter stating the reason for the request to FBI ID Division, Room 10104, Washington, DC 20537-9700.
  • A Homestudy report.
  • Copies of your passport(s).
  • An US certificate of child adoption approval from the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
  • Photos reflecting your family life, including two front-view photos of each applicant.

Interview in China

The following documents must be brought to the interviews in China:

  • If you and your partner do not both make the journey, the partner who stays at home must sign a power of attorney. This document must be notarized by the Chinese Embassy or one of the Chinese Consulates General in the US and taken to the interviews in China.
  • A copy of the I-600A approval notice from the USCIS

Translation requirements

All documents must be accompanied by a certified Mandarin Chinese translation. The CCAA will translate all documents for a set fee of $200. Should you choose not to use the CCAA service, any other translator must assert the translation’s validity before a notary public, and the notary’s seal must then be authenticated.
