Child Adoption from China: Additional information

June 28, 2007 by sachinskg

If you have specific questions about adopting from China, these can be asked of the US Consulate General in Guangzhou. General questions about intercountry adoption can be asked of the Office of Children’s Issues:

US Department of State
CA/OCS/CI, SA-29
4th Floor, 2201 C Street
NW, Washington
DC 20520-4818
Tel: 1-888-407-4747

Listed below are helpline numbers for questions regarding intercountry adoption and immigration:

  • Toll free: Overseas Citizens Services provides information on international adoption and international parental child abduction. 1-888-407-4747. 8am-8pm EST. Monday to Friday, except federal holidays. Those unable to use toll free numbers (e.g. those calling from abroad) should call 1-202-501-4444.
  • US Department of State Visa Office offers recorded information about immigrant visas for adopting children. (202) 663-1225
  • US Citizenship and Immigration Services offers recorded information on requesting immigrant visa application forms. 1-800-870-FORM (3676)

The US Department of State website is a good source of useful and up to date information:

  • Adoption Information Flyers and the International Adoptions brochure
  • Consular Information Sheets: CISs are published to provide information for travelers, such as the location of the US Embassy, health conditions, political situations and crime reports
  • Any serious and specific security threats not addressed in that country’s CIS will be publicly announced by the State Department. If the threat were sufficiently serious, a Travel Warning would be issued advising against US citizens traveling to that country.

The USCIS website is another source of useful information.
