Child Adopting from Guatemala: Medical Exam

April 17, 2007 by sachinskg

There is one pediatric clinic and two GPs on the US Embassy’s panel of physicians, the list of medical professionals authorized to carry out medical examinations for legal purposes. Your child must have a medical examination before s/he will be granted an immigrant visa.

If your child is under the age of 15, the examination will cost $85. This rises to $100 if the child is over the age of 15. Fees are owed to the individual physician.

If the physician determines that your child is in need of vaccinations, these can be carried out in Guatemala, or you can sign an affidavit promising the child will receive the innoculations within thirty days of arriving in the US. The Embassy advises parents to discuss vaccination with your adoption agencies and ask the agencies to do so with your children’s carer’s, as there have been cases of orphanages and foster carers neglecting to vaccinate children because the adopting parents can easily sign this affidavit.

After your attorney has been given your pink slip, they are able to make an appointment for a medical examination of the child by one of the panel physicians.
