Adoption Costs, the Cost of Adopting

April 13, 2007 by sachinskg

The costs and expenses involved with adoption will be different in each country, state or jurisdiction. Some will offer financial assistance to help adopters with the expenses. Many countries make it illegal to charge for adoption, but there are certain fees to agencies that are part of the adoption. Most of the states have initiated statutes and regulations regarding the amount of fees that can be charged for adopting a child.

The United States government gives a $10,000 tax credit for adopting a child. In Canada as well as the United States, there is no fee involved in adopting a child through the child welfare system. Some of the fees and expenses that are discussed and regulated in the statutes are placement costs, such as agency fees; legal and attorney expenses for adoptive and birth parents; and some of the expenses of the birth mother during pregnancy. Even in adoptions where there are fees, no money is to go to the mother of the child with the exception of her medical bills.

International adoptions, as a rule, are more expensive because there are additional costs such as traveling expenses back and forth to meet with the child and family. There may also be extra fees to transport the child to his or her new home and country.
