Scheduling the immigrant visa interview

It is essential that you wait for confirmation of an immigrant visa interview before making travel plans. Appointments are available here between Monday and Thursday from 9 AM. You are also advised to contact the US Embassy in Guangzhou before leaving the US.

Completing the child’s medical examination and processing the immigrant visa will usually take 3 or 4 days, so you should expect to stay in Guangzhou for at least this long.

Medical examination

A physician named on the US Embassy list of approved physicians must carry out the medical examination. The Adopted Children’s Immigrant Visa Unit will provide a form and this must be completed by the physician. The examination can be performed in Beijing, Shanghai, Taishan or Guangzhou. The latter is often the most convenient, and contact details are given below:

Guangzhou Health and Quarantine Service
33 Shamian North Road
Tel: 020-8188-9513

Documentation

You will need to take the following to your interview with the US Consulate General in Guangzhou:

  1. A valid Chinese passport and exit permit for the child
  2. The results of the child’s medical examination
  3. Two 13/4 inch color photos of the child
  4. The Chinese notarized documentation
  5. If you and your partner are not both present, the spouse who is must have a signed and notarized “Affidavit of Support” for the other.

Processing of the visa will then take 24hrs, and all relevant documents will be sent to the Adopted Children’s Immigrant Visa Unit in Guangzhou. The child’s visa will be ready the following day.
